Introduction Of Absinthe Proof

The legalization of Absinthe in the USA and other countries has made it famous once again in the world. Many young people are trying it for the first time and knocking it back without any consideration of its alcohol content. So, what is Absinthe proof?

A blend of herbs along with wormwood (artemisia absinthium), aniseed and fennel is used in the manufacturing of Absinthe. The characteristic emerald green coloring of classic verte styles of Absinthe gave it the name of the Green Fairy, La Fee Verte.

Absinthe is diluted with iced water before drinking. The Absinthe louches when water is poured over a sugar lump on a slotted spoon and into the Absinthe.

The wormwood was used in the preparation of Absinthe due to which it was banned in the early 1900s. Dr Valentin Magnan tested worwmood on guinea pigs in 1845 and found that a guinea pig given wormwood oilhad convulsions, whereas, a guinea pig given alcohol just got drunk. According to the tests done by Magnan during 1872 thujone was declared to be far more dangerous than ethanol (alcohol). According to him and others in the medical profession thujone was psychoactive and caused psychedelic effects. Absinthe was restricted due to this reason.

Due to similarities in the structures of a thujone molecule and THC from the drug cannabis they acted in a same manner.

There is no truths in all these claims. Although thujone is active on the GABA receptors of the brain when consumed in large quantity but there is no similarity between thujone and THC. After testing Absinthes it has been proved that the quantity of thujone in it is very small to be harmful. Before being affected by thujone one will die due to alcohol poisoning when taking Absinthe in large amount!

A person should be careful while consuming Absinthe because it is highly alcoholic drink.
